Back in March, Vice Games published a report on Near’s perfectionist quest to locate Bahamut Lagoon, a 16-bit cult RPG that never made it to North America. In commemoration of their contributions to the emulation community, Ars Technica published an article by Near that looked at coding the BSNES and how SNES emulators could get “a few pixels out of complete perfection”. One of their achievements is the distortion-free overclocking of the virtual SNES processor with spectacular results. They were particularly passionate about game preservation and devoted the development of BSNES – later renamed Higan – to the greatest possible accuracy. Near was famous for her detailed, perfectionist approach to her work.

In a series of messages posted on Twitter, Near spoke of the online attacks and doxing she and her friends suffered from Kiwi Farms, saying, “The internet is not a game. SNES emulation is a challenge like few other computer architectures. Their outrage centered on Kiwi Farms, a forum known for maliciously targeted online harassment. Many expressed their anger over the online bullying that ultimately led Near to suicide. A friend confirmed the reports circulating on social media but asked for privacy.Ĭommunity members used social media to express their grief after the tragedy, praise Near’s work, and share the positive impact they have had on their lives. Near, also known as Byuu, took his own life over the weekend. I think Digital Foundry has gone into this before and have stated that Higan is the most accurate. The emulation and fan location communities today are experiencing a flurry of memorials and grief following the reported death of Near, who was the force behind both the BSNES emulator and the Bahamut Lagoon fan translation.
